What we do

Complementary Therapies

As the name suggests, our complementary therapies complement the use of conventional medicine to help relieve stress and help improve the wellbeing of our users. Our complementary therapies are designed to complement traditional medical treatments for MS. These therapies, which include options such as massage and reflexology, relaxation classes, stress reduction, and symptom management.

Sports Massage

Unlike a Swedish massage, which is designed to aid relaxation, a sports massage can help to energise a person, and improve the range of motion and muscle flexibility. It can also increase the supply of nutrients and oxygen through improved circulation, as well as help ease tension, remove knots and help injury recovery.

Yoga

Yoga helps you to improve and focus the alignment of your body. It can also develop the co-ordination of your breathing and movement as well as teaching you how to hold your posture and flow from one posture to another. Yoga can be practiced while standing, lying down, seated or in a wheelchair, making this an ideal form of relaxation and exercise for people with MS.

Reflexology

Reflexology works on the feet to help heal the whole person. It is thought that reflexology can help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium by encouraging the body to work naturally, to restore its own healthy balance. Many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress.

Swedish Massage

Also known as a ‘classic massage’, this therapy promotes relaxation and blood flow using techniques such as rubbing, kneading, stroking and gliding. If you’re battling MS, massage is a fantastic way to ease those muscular pains and symptoms, while giving your whole body a chance to unwind and relax.

Reiki

Reiki is a method of natural healing and involves channelling the energy through the hands of the practitioner to the receiver. Reiki promotes physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing by redirecting the flow of energy, producing inner harmony and relieving stress and depression.

Indian Head Massage

Designed to ease headaches and stress, this kind of head massage focuses on the face and scalp but can sometimes continue down the neck, shoulders and upper arms. The techniques used in Indian head massage promote relaxation and help lower stress levels, which can improve overall well-being.

Group Visits and Outreach

Alongside our extensive service list we also offer outreach services in addition to those provided in Morpeth and North Seaton. This allows us to bring our services to more people across the region.

MSRRF can provide services to small groups of users, who may not be able to attend due to transport costs, locations or have no means of transport. As a group they can benefit from an exercise and complementary therapy session, in a social environment, over a morning or afternoon. We can also provide tea, coffee and cakes.

MS active are an established group from Easington, County Durham who visit us and really benefit from our services.

Our outreach services are located in the following areas; we are always looking to work with organisations that have a suitable location and share our vision. Durham Leadgate & Belmont. Tyne and Wear Walkergate Park Hospital & South Shields.
